Let’s be real—I’m that mom. I go big on birthdays (and holidays… and Tuesday spirit days), and I’m proud of it. I fully believe in being “extra” because these are the moments my kids will carry with them forever. That said… I also believe in staying sane and not blowing the entire Target aisle every time we celebrate.
Here’s what actually helped me pull off Sutton’s Sunset Cinema party without losing my mind:
1. Pick One Big “Wow” Moment
For me, it was the whole backyard movie setup. That was the centerpiece, and everything else was just supporting cast. You don’t have to go over the top everywhere—just pick one spot to shine and build around it.
2. DIY What You Can — Within Your Limits
If DIY is your thing, great. If not, that’s okay too. I personally love crafting some pieces—it saves money and adds that personal touch. I made custom signs, snack trays, and yes, I stayed up late with my Cricut like a madwoman… but only because I enjoy it. Do what brings joy, not stress.
3. DIY Tablecloth Bows 🎀 (My Favorite Cheap Trick)
These are so cute and SO easy:
• Grab a plastic tablecloth (Dollar Tree all day 💁♀️).
• Cut it lengthwise into strips.
• Gather the middle and tie with ribbon, twine, or another strip.
• Fluff it into a bow and tie it to chairs, tables, fences—wherever you want a pop of color.
I did these in Sutton’s party colors, and they instantly made the setup look polished and themed without spending a fortune.
4. Think Backwards From the Photo
I always ask myself: what’s the one photo I want from this party? For me, it was Sutton sitting with her friends watching the movie with all the lights and popcorn—so I styled everything around that moment. Bonus: it helps me not overthink every single detail.
5. Use Amazon and Dollar Tree Like a Mom Boss
The secret to looking Pinterest-perfect? Mixing high and low. I splurged on a few custom touches (hello, personalized cookies!), but balanced it with budget wins from Dollar Tree and Amazon. Cute bins, popcorn containers, trays—styled right, no one knows the difference.
6. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
This is one I’m still working on. I try to do it all, but I’m learning that letting someone else press play on the music or refill the popcorn lets me actually enjoy the party too. You don’t have to do everything to still be the party queen.
7. Set Up a Trash Station. Seriously.
Label a couple bins, throw in some paper towels, and thank yourself later when you’re not dragging half-empty juice pouches out of your flower beds.
8. Remember: It’s for Them, But Also You ❤️
Yes, it’s all for the kids—but it’s also for you. The memories. The smiles. The way they light up when they realize, “My mom did this for me.” And yeah… mine are getting older and now expect the magic. But I’m okay with that. Because one day, they’ll tell their kids about these moments—and that makes every late night and hot glue burn 100% worth it.
..and if you happen to need help, ideas, resources, etc.. you know where to find me. I
My next party is in August. Sloane turns FOUR!.... until then, North Akron!
